The Crest…

The Continent of Africa & and the African Drums – represent where it all begins for our family… West Africa.

The Ship – represents the journey our ancestor Tracie took with many others when they were captured in their homelands and brought to America.  Between the years 1450 and 1850, at least 12 million Africans were shipped from Africa across the Atlantic Ocean – the notorious “Middle Passage” – primarily to colonies in North America, South America and the West Indies.  Eighty percent of these kidnapped Africans (or at least 7 million) were exported during the 18th century, with a mortality rate of probably 10-20% on the ships in route for the Americas.  Tracie was a survivor!!!

The Tree – represents Tracie and the roots that hold and now spread across the world. South Carolina and the Church – Jenkinsville, South Carolina…the land and the legacy built with the vision and sweat and tears of the Martin Clan – Whitehall Church.  Since the birth of our family, religion has been a vital part of our lives and the church still stands today as a testament to that religion and our love for God who has sustained us down through the years.  Approximately 840 acres of land deeded to the male offspring of the slave-owner, Robert Martin, has grown into 1,000s of acres of Martin-owned land in Jenkinsville and its surrounding areas. The Mortar Board and Diploma – Education…first, last, and always! When the first Martins were taught to read, write and conduct business, it was the beginning of a great family that has surpassed all expectations.

The Infinity Symbol – Something without limits; boundless…that is the Martin Clan.

Purple – Royal Color

Green – Prosperity

The original crest was unveiled and presented to the family by the Martin Family Club of New York on July 2004, during the 36th Annual United Family Reunion held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Jersey City, New Jersey.
